Cancer Treatment

The Cancer Center offers radiation oncology, which is used for treating tumors and cancer through radiation therapies. Radiation Oncology uses x-rays, electrons, and gamma rays to destroy cancer. These therapies are used on most types of cancers including, breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, skin cancer, and brain tumors.

In many cases, radiation therapy is combined with surgery and chemotherapy to achieve the desired outcome. During radiation therapy, the oncologist will generally see the patients about once a week to make sure they are okay and to help manage any side effects they may have.

What is Radiation Therapy?
Radiation therapy is treatment of disease using high-energy X-rays. Radiation therapy is successfully used in the treatment of most cancers, often in conjunction with surgery and/or chemotherapy. These treatments can be used alone or together. The first step in the radiation treatment process is the consultation which usually occurs at the request of the surgeon or medical oncologist. During the consultation, your radiation oncologist will review with you all medical information about your diagnosis. A physical exam will follow. Afterward, the radiation oncologist will discuss with you and your family the rationale for radiation therapy, benefits, and possible side effects. The decision about which treatments to use is specifically tailored to each patient based upon the cancer and individual treatment needs. If radiation therapy is recommended, simulation will be the next step in your treatment.

What is Simulation?
Simulation is a planning appointment during which the radiation oncologist and radiation therapist will take special X-ray pictures of the cancer in your body using a CT scanner. Using these pictures, the radiation oncologist then maps out the cancer and the organs that surround the cancer. A radiation beam is then shaped to your body and to the size and shape of the tumor. The customized shaping helps to protect the healthy organs and tissue surrounding the cancer. You may receive permanent ink sots, or a map, that help position you for the radiation treatments.
