New hospital CEO Howerton aims to expand access to care

As he settles into his new position as Sampson Regional Medical Center’s leader, Dr. Shawn Howerton said it is humbling to be the head of a hospital that boasts well-trained physicians, and said it is his goal to further the quality patient care received at the facility and in the community, while teaching the next generation of doctors. Howerton named hospital CEO

After nearly a year as Sampson Regional Medical Center’s interim leader, Shawn Howerton, MD, was green-lighted Tuesday night to take the reins in a permanent capacity. Hospital officials issued a press release Wednesday morning officially announcing the SRMC Board of Trustees actions, which came with a unanimous vote to hire Howerton as the chief operating officer for the hospital. Howerton joined SRMC in 2011 as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and has served as the hospital’s interim CEO since November 2013. “During his tenure as chief medical officer, Howerton has been a tremendous asset to SRMC,” trustee board chairman Allie Ray McCullen said at the time of Howerton’s interim appointment last September. .....more>>

Golf tourney to benefit hospital, purchase surgical equipment

Golfers who participate in the 11th annual Partners for Life Invitational Golf Tournament next month will be ensuring that local patients do not have to drive great lengths to stay on par with their health needs. The golf tournament, sponsored by the Sampson Regional Medical Center Foundation, will take place Thursday, April 24, at Coharie Country Club. Proceeds from this year’s event will be used to purchase a new Olympus 190 laparoscopic surgical tower for the hospital’s operating room, a boon to minimally invasive surgeries. .....more>>
